Professional Statement

I have been a psychologist for 35 years and practice what I call Dynamic Integrative Somatic Psychotherapy. In my practice. I have incorporated all the traditional models of psychotherapy that can aid in fostering self-learning, self-healing, and self-development--psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, family systems, Gestalt, encounter, and other theoretical perspectives--but I also employ a somatic approach to the work, where particular emphasis is placed on how what we experience physically in our body can guide us in revolutionary new ways on our path to greater wholeness.

Difficult experiences, especially traumatic ones, are not simply stored as thoughts or emotions but as somatic, implicit, and procedural memories -- often labeled "body memories." In fact, the latest thinking in neuroscience is that what we have been calling "the unconscious" -- that is, all the thoughts, emotions and past experiences that we unknowingly keep out of our immediate awareness -- is actually a composite of these memories stored physical traces in our body.

Somatic approaches to psychotherapy emphasize how our "felt sense" of what's happening physically on the inside -- e.g., our posture, our physical impulses that spark movement, our muscle tension, bracing, respiration and heart rate, hot or cold feelings, digestive processes, and balance -- all can inform us about our unexamined or under-examined feelings and guide us in recovery from trauma, depression, and other disruptive states.
