Professional Statement

I am a psychologist who treats only adults. I have provided psychotherapy and psychological evaluation services for over 30 years. As a psychotherapist, I treat many types of mental disorders, chronic health issues, and stressful situations. My psychotherapeutic orientation is primarily behavioral and solution-focused. If you work with me, we will strive to identify and understand the behaviors and thinking patterns that keep you stuck or interfere with your experiencing a contented and meaningful life. I often recommend targeted, practical behavioral changes to help you resolve identified difficulties in particular situations and with particular individuals in your life. I employ a variety of techniques designed to help you cope with difficult emotions and change maladaptive mental or behavioral reactions to stressful or demanding situations, which may prevent you from leading the type of life you really want. Using these treatment techniques, MY goal is to empower you to achieve YOUR goals.

While my treatment style is often active and directive, I believe nothing is of more therapeutic value than listening carefully to form an accurate understanding, without judgment, of who you are. I will respect your autonomy and will never insist that you do what you are unwilling to do.

Education/Experience

I am a clinical psychologist with specialities in clinical neuropsychology and behavioral treatment of chronic medical conditions, including chronic pain. I have also provided psychotherapy to help my clients deal with a wide variety of behavioral and mental health disorders as well as interpersonal issues and life stress. My training includes a Ph.D. degree in Clinical Psychology and specialty training and experience in the areas of chronic pain treatment, rehabilitation psychology, geriatric psychology, and clinical neuropsychology. I worked 7 years as an inpatient rehabilitation psychologist and neuropsychologist at the Lee Memorial Rehabilitation Hospital in Fort Myers, FL, while also doing psychotherapy and psychological evaluations in an outpatient office.

Since October 2000, I have been in independent outpatient practice. Over the years, I divided my time between the provision of both psychological/neuropsychological assessment and psychotherapy. About 2 years ago, I shifted my focus to providing psychotherapeutic services almost exclusively. The combination of assessment and psychotherapy practice has afforded me a deeper, broader view of the nature of the problems that people bring to me. The varied nature of my professional experience has led to a more thorough understanding about the ways in which psychosocial stress, medical factors, cognitive factors, and personality may influence the emergence or maintenance of mental and behavioral disorders and inform treatment choices.
